For nearly 70 years, PCL’s industrial fabrication shop has grown, integrated new technology and refined its processes, while remaining committed to being Canada’s most trusted industrial builder.

The familiar smell of freshly cut metal and the high-pitched buzz of angle grinders greet Gary Trigg as he steps onto the floor of PCL’s pipe fabrication facility in Nisku, Alberta — a place he led for nearly three decades.

“It brings back lots of memories every time I come back here,” he says, as he takes in the busy shop space. “I always love coming back.”

Trigg wasn’t the kind of boss who spent all his time in an office. Even a decade after retiring, he’s comfortable on the floor — and is greeted warmly by workers who have been here long enough to remember him.

“Hey! Good to see you,” says Geoff Paul.

“Family’s good?” Trigg asks former coworker Greg Cooper.

For Trigg, the facility will always feel like home, even as he marvels over the changes since he left.

“I mean, you look at how the place has grown over the years and it’s amazing,” he says. “The evolution is incredible.”

The 145,000-square-foot shop is currently run by Kim Heit and Pedro Mendes, who both started here in the 1990s under Trigg’s leadership.
