Hazelview Investments Inc. has reaffirmed its leadership in sustainable real estate with an impressive score of 83 in the 2025 Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) and a first-place ranking in the Canadian multi-family standing investments peer group for the second consecutive year. This achievement underscores Hazelview’s long-term commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) excellence across its private real estate portfolio.

In addition to retaining its GRESB Green Star status in both the Development and Standing Investments categories, Hazelview continues to advance a strategic sustainability framework centered on operational efficiency, innovation, and transparency. The company’s ESG leadership is reflected in robust policies, comprehensive data management, active stakeholder engagement, and extensive green building certifications throughout its portfolio.

In 2024, Hazelview reached a major milestone by maintaining 100% green building certification across its Canadian multi-family assets. The company also made significant investments—totaling $5.4 million—in capital projects aimed at improving resource efficiency and reducing environmental impact. These initiatives included:

  • Upgrades to building automation systems and high-efficiency boilers
  • LED lighting retrofits and VFD booster pump replacements
  • Window and door replacements, submetering, and water retrofit projects
  • 67 waste audits to inform data-driven sustainability planning

These efforts led to measurable environmental improvements, including a 1.4% reduction in energy intensity, a 5.9% decrease in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and a 24% operational waste diversion rate, along with reductions in water use across multiple building types.

Hazelview’s commitment to innovation has also driven progress. Through Hazelview Ventures, the firm continues to pilot emerging technologies that enhance building performance and sustainability. Among these initiatives is Lamarr.AI, a drone-enabled artificial intelligence platform that identifies energy inefficiencies such as air leaks and thermal bridging for targeted remediation. Hazelview also implemented SensorSuite’s smart energy management system to enable real-time monitoring and control, improving energy efficiency in older buildings.

“Our mission is to build a sustainable, resilient, and equitable real estate business,” said Colleen Krempulec, Managing Director and Head of Sustainability at Hazelview. “We’re proud to once again lead our peer group in the GRESB rankings. These results reaffirm our dedication to advancing best practices and creating long-term value for both people and places.”

By embedding sustainability into every level of its operations, Hazelview continues to demonstrate how forward-thinking ESG practices not only drive environmental progress but also strengthen portfolio performance and community impact.
