PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. has installed the St. Paul’s Hospital skybridge connecting Vancouver’s new hospital with the future Clinical Support and Research Centre (CSRC), completing the major lift four months ahead of its original January 2027 schedule. The two-storey structure measures 26 metres long, 3.5 metres wide and weighs approximately 136,000 kilograms. A 750-ton Mammoet crane lifted the skybridge into place following six months of ground-level prefabrication that included structural steel, concrete decks, curtainwall glazing, roofing, fall protection anchors and exterior soffit panels. Custom stands replicated the bridge’s final slope and loading conditions, allowing glazing to be installed before the lift while reducing work at height above an active roadway and hospital entrance. The early September 2026 installation provides additional time for integration and commissioning ahead of the new St. Paul’s Hospital’s targeted February 2027 opening. The skybridge will ultimately connect the hospital with the 12-storey, 34,400-square-metre CSRC, which is scheduled to open in 2029 and will accommodate research, medical offices, corporate services and childcare.
