Construction of the QEII Halifax Infirmary acute care tower has reached a major milestone with completion of the Level 8 podium, which forms the structural base of the 14-storey healthcare facility. The podium will house the expanded emergency department, surgical suites, laboratories, ambulatory treatment areas, hyperbaric medicine, medical device reprocessing and other hospital infrastructure. Crews have surpassed one million work hours with zero lost-time incidents while excavating 543,000 tonnes of material, pouring 54,000 cubic metres of concrete and installing 5,800 tonnes of steel and rebar. The Halifax Infirmary Expansion Project, being delivered through collaboration involving Build Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Health, the provincial government and Plenary PCL Health, was also named Best Social Infrastructure Project at the 2026 P3 Awards. Building envelope, electrical and technical systems work is continuing, with mechanical and electrical equipment and elevator installation scheduled to begin in 2027. Substantial completion and turnover to Nova Scotia Health are scheduled for fall 2030, followed by preparations for the facility to open to patients in fall 2031.
