GE’s Bio-inspired Giant Earthworm-like Tunneling Robot

May 28th, 2020

A demonstration of GE’s bio-inspired giant earthworm-like tunneling robot. The robot is shown digging through dirt in a test apparatus set up in the Robotics Lab at GE Research in Niskayuna, NY.

Mimicking the rhythmic movements of earthworms moving through soil and force of tree roots growing into the ground, this bio-inspired soft robot design developed by GE researchers could enable faster, more efficient ways to dig underground tunnels.

The development of this tunneling robot is part of a 15- month, $2.5 MM project through DARPA’s Underminer program to develop faster, more efficient ways to dig tunnels in support of critical military operations. The new capabilities under development could enable a multitude of robotic applications, ranging from non-destructive inspection and repair of industrial infrastructure pipe inspection to supporting wireless infrastructure construction.

Elon Musk’s Boring Company Finishes Digging Las Vegas Tunnels

May 27th, 2020

Elon Musk’s Boring Company Las Vegas tunnel digging is finished. Both twin tunnels of the Boring company are completed and hopefully soon will transport people with Tesla cars.

Teslarati reports:

The Boring Company’s twin tunnels for its upcoming Las Vegas Convention Center Loop have been completed. With the buildout of the people-mover system largely unaffected by the outbreak of the coronavirus, the transport tunnels are still expected to be ready for public use in time for the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show.

That is, of course, if CES still happens. The ongoing pandemic has affected multiple sectors worldwide, and it has resulted in cancellations and delays for numerous high-profile events. That being said, if CES 2021 ends up pulling through, participants can be assured that they will have a convenient way to travel from one end of the LVCC complex to another.

The progress of the twin tunnels of the LVCC Loop has been quite rapid, likely thanks to innovations that have been adopted by the Boring Company. Prior to the Las Vegas project, most of the tunneling startup’s experience lay in a test tunnel that was built in Hawthorne, CA. Las Vegas will be the site of the Boring Company’s first transport tunnel system that’s designed for public use.
