Workers critical of trespassers on Riverdale-area construction site in Cornwall

Construction workers in the north end of Cornwall’s Riverdale neighbourhood are urging residents not to trespass on construction sites for everyone’s safety.

Last week, construction worker Kyle Arthur wrote a Facebook post airing his frustrations. The post received ample support online.

“You speed through here with your cars I could be killed this is where I work!! You walk through here with no safety gear no high visibility clothing you can be killed,” Arthur said in the post. “You are not entitled to be in here as you may think you are but this is an active construction site. I don’t need to be hurt, nor do you!”

Arthur said trespassing on the site is not a new occurrence, but the frequency has grown since the summer to a point where he felt compelled to say something publicly. Roads in new subdivisions under construction remain private property, belonging to the company that owns the land, until those roads are transferred over to the city’s ownership and management.

Signs posted saying the roadways are closed to traffic, or are not public streets, should be obeyed.

“From what I’ve witnessed is the residents walk right past the signs, with their dogs, or as groups of people on a tour of the site. When told they can’t be there, they become argumentative like they’re inconvenienced. They often even get rude,” he said. “They also drive through there with their personal cars at a fast rate of speed.”
