Workers allowed back in London construction site two months after deadly collapse

The London Free Press reports that workers were allowed back onto the site of a four-storey London building under construction that partially collapsed in December, killing two and injuring several others, Ontario’s Labour Ministry says.

It wasn’t immediately clear Wednesday what type of work is allowed to resume at the site at 555 Teeple Terrace, along Wonderland Road South. The building partly collapsed Dec. 11 when a portion of its fourth floor caved in.

An investigation into the cause of the collapse continues, a spokesperson said, adding Labour Ministry inspectors still have control over the part of the building that collapsed.

Brock Development Group of London is the developer of the apartment project, called the Nest on Wonderland.

Michelle Doornbosch, president of the Nest on Wonderland, did not immediately respond to a request for comment about work on the site or the future of the project, which has been halted since the deaths.

Since the investigation began, the ministry has issued 24 requirements and three work orders in relation to the construction site, the spokesperson said.

The ministry would not release details of the orders while the probe continues.

It was about noon on Dec. 11 when the collapse occurred. Some of the estimated 40 workers on the site at the time have described seeing and hearing a freshly poured concrete section on the fourth floor collapse and smash down onto each floor beneath to the ground, taking the outer wall with it.

Two workers, John Martens, 21, and Henry Harder, 26, died in the collapse.

Five other workers were injured.
