Western Canada dominates the podium at this year’s PwC Canada V2R Awards

TORONTOMay 11, 2018 /CNW/ – FREDsense Technologies, Ballard Power Systems, PCL Construction, and BC Civil Resolution Tribunal were named winners of PwC Canada’s 2018 Vision to Reality (V2R) Awards. The awards ceremony took place at the Arcadian Court in Toronto on May 10, 2018.

“Congratulations to all winners and finalists! They make it clear that Canada is a global innovation centre that has the talent to compete on a world stage,” said Tahir Ayub, Managing Partner, Markets and Industries at PwC Canada. “The V2R awards is a catalyst for bringing together Canadian organizations to showcase their innovations and network among a group of leaders to create a dynamic ecosystem that will shape the future of Canada and the world.”

V2R applications were reviewed by an independent panel of judges and divided into four categories, The Visionary: small organization or startup, The Builder: mid-market organization, The Reinventor: large enterprise, and The Accelerator: public sector organization.

The 2018 Vision to Reality Awards Winners include:

The Visionary (up to $50M): FREDsense Technologies from Alberta has pioneered a portable and simple water chemistry kit that helps operators and engineers understand water chemistry. The revolutionary Field Ready Electrochemical Detector (FRED) uses data that can be obtained in less than an hour from a simple cartridge system that anyone can use. Driven by synthetic biology, FRED uses bacteria to sense chemicals in the environment.

The Builder ($50M$1B): Ballard Power Systems from British Columbia developed a technology that accelerates the adoption of fuel cell technology for zero-emission power systems, helping to reduce air pollution. Fuel cell applications include portable power, forklifts and heavy-duty vehicles (trucks, buses and trains). The organization developed an innovative electrode design and fuel cell stack using a groundbreaking non-precious metal catalyst developed by partner, Nisshinbo.

The Reinventor ($1B+): PCL Construction from Alberta boldly eliminated its data centre and migrated to a 21st century computing model that rests on their four technology pillars: cloud computing, field mobility, enterprise-wide integration and data analytics. It now delivers invaluable solutions that save time and enable data-driven decisions about a construction project’s schedule, quality, safety and financial performance.

The Accelerator: BC Civil Resolution Tribunal from British Columbia allows British Columbians to have 24/7 free online access to strata (condo) and small claims dispute resolution services, including self-help tools, triage services and legal information and guidance, a service that has traditionally been insurmountably complex. It provides flexibility and collaboration to resolve disputes as early and inexpensively as possible.
