A tragic crane accident occurred at the Oakridge Centre redevelopment project in Vancouver, resulting in one fatality. The incident was reported at around 2:56 p.m. on February 21, when a crane dropped its load at the 5800-block of Cambie. Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services Capt. Matthew Trudeau confirmed the death, though no other injuries were reported. The scene was attended by emergency services, police, and WorkSafeBC members, with a focus on stabilizing the situation.
B.C. Emergency Health Services dispatched two ambulances, but no hospital transports were necessary. A witness at the site, preferring anonymity, described the accident involving the detachment of pre-built wooden forms being lifted to the top floor of a tower. These plywood forms, intended for the northeast corner of the tower, fell apart upon detachment, damaging the tower, safety fencing, and windows on multiple floors, before crashing to the ground. Debris was scattered across Cambie Street at West 44th Avenue, with nearby metal fencing also damaged.
