Transforming Calgary’s Building Sector with ENBIX Community of Practice

Calgary’s building, construction, and renovation sectors are stepping up to the climate challenge with the launch of the Calgary Community of Practice, a groundbreaking initiative under the Emissions-Neutral Buildings Information Exchange (ENBIX). This platform celebrates the collective effort to share insights and foster innovations towards achieving emissions-neutral buildings in Calgary.

Mayor Jyoti Gondek highlighted the significance of this initiative, emphasizing Calgary’s commitment to developing local solutions for emissions reduction in the construction sector. The ENBIX initiative is seen as a vital step towards building a sustainable future, with a focus on creating capacity and momentum for emissions-neutral construction practices that promise growth and sustainability for years to come.

The Calgary Community of Practice serves as a dynamic forum for professionals in the building industry to exchange knowledge about emissions-neutral construction techniques. Its aim is to hasten the shift towards a sustainable built environment, encompassing both new and existing structures throughout Alberta.

Claire Beckstead, The City of Calgary’s Leader of Community Energy, underlined the importance of collaborative efforts like ENBIX in achieving the city’s ambitious goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The initiative is poised to devise Calgary-specific solutions for high-performance buildings, thereby expediting progress towards this goal.

With buildings being a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada, Calgary’s initiative addresses a crucial need. Buildings in Calgary contribute to approximately two-thirds of the city’s total GHG emissions. ENBIX plans to broaden its outreach over the next four years through various channels such as market research, industry experiences, training sessions, webinars, and more, to share valuable insights and innovations in the field.

Andrea Linsky of the Alberta Ecotrust Foundation and ENBIX Team Lead stressed the initiative’s role in identifying unique challenges and opportunities in Calgary for achieving emissions-neutral buildings. ENBIX aims to break down barriers, encourage innovation, and share success stories within the industry.

The initiative is backed by industry leaders such as the Calgary Construction Association and the Smart Sustainable Resilient Infrastructure Association, highlighting the industry’s commitment to sustainable building practices.

Bill Black, President of the Calgary Construction Association, remarked on the significance of the ENBIX Calgary Community of Practice’s launch as a defining moment for the industry’s dedication to sustainable building practices. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing in reducing the carbon footprint and contributing to a cleaner future for Calgary.

Professionals in Calgary looking to be part of this transformative journey towards emissions-neutral building practices can join the ENBIX Calgary Community of Practice by visiting enbix.ca/get-involved, marking their commitment to a sustainable and greener future for the city.
