The Town of Yarmouth has awarded a tender package for second floor renovations of the Yarmouth Fire Hall.

The tender, which closed April 23, was advertised provincially on the Nova Scotia procurement website and awarded to Garian Construction of Yarmouth who submitted the low bid of $858,470.

Work at the hall will begin soon. The focus will be placed on second floor renovations, spray fire proofing, and life safety upgrades. The second floor will receive a major washroom upgrade including a barrier-free washroom and the hall will be equipped with a new kitchen and bar. A new HVAC system will be installed and considerable finish work will be completed throughout the space.

A number of safety improvements are also planned that will get the upper level up to code. Extensive fire spray proofing will be completed which involves spraying the underside of the steel structure and deck to provide a fire rating between the lower and upper floor. Other safety improvements include exit stair construction being brought to code, including fire rating and railings. Finally, fire separations will be applied to walls, and emergency lighting will be installed.
“All of us here at Garian Construction are very proud and fortunate to have been chosen to complete this large renovation, especially during these difficult times,” said Garian Construction President Ian McNicol. “This building has hosted many events over the years so we are also very pleased this will soon be available for our community again. A day is coming . . . when self distancing won’t apply and this facility will be ready for it.”

Town of Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood also expressed excitement about the project and pointed to the importance of keeping infrastructure projects moving forward during this COVID time.
