Therme Canada releases updated design for the West Island of Ontario Place

Therme Canada has unveiled its exciting new design for the West Island of Ontario Place, introducing a year-round, family-friendly destination coupled with an additional four acres of public parkland. This transformational update has been carefully crafted with input from the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN) and incorporates valuable feedback gathered from public meetings, community engagement, and City of Toronto planning staff.

The key highlights of this revitalization effort include:

  1. Expansive Public Space: The West Island now boasts a campus-style layout, expanding the public space by four acres. This includes the addition of parks, rooftop trails, and gardens, culminating in a total of nearly 16 acres, making it the largest public gathering space on Toronto’s western waterfront.
  2. Indigenous Collaboration: Therme Canada has partnered with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation to create new public gathering spaces that celebrate the region’s Indigenous heritage. The design enhances views of iconic elements like the Pods, Cinesphere, downtown skyline, and Lake Ontario.
  3. Land Bridge and Green Roofs: The project introduces a land bridge connecting the West Island to the mainland and green roofs with pathways resembling the Credit River. This recognizes and pays homage to the site’s significant Indigenous heritage.

Therme Canada envisions Ontario Place as an affordable and family-friendly wellbeing destination, catering to millions of visitors each year. The site will offer diverse experiences, including swimming at the public beach, leisurely walks in green spaces, cultural programming, and a variety of dining options. It’s poised to become a place where everyone can create lasting memories.

This ambitious project not only transforms Ontario Place into a world-class destination but also sets an example of how collaboration with Indigenous communities can enrich our shared cultural heritage and public spaces.
