The runaway cost of government construction projects

Infrastructure projects across Canada, such as fire halls and police stations, now far exceed initial budget projections due to a variety of factors, including increased requirements and the inclusion of social justice considerations. A once $18 million hangar project for the Department of National Defence, for instance, ballooned to $155 million after additional specifications and “woke” requirements were added. This pattern of cost overruns reflects a broader issue of project mismanagement and lack of accountability in government infrastructure spending, exacerbated by new layers of complexity and requirements.
