Survey: How the pandemic has changed how construction companies are working

Procore recently surveyed U.S. and Canadian senior executives in construction’s owners and developer space.

The survey found that construction project owners have taken a number of actions in response to COVID-19, and indicated which changes they feel might last.

The 41 respondents said they’d taken the following actions:

  • 49% readjusted project cost projections
  • 41% established staggered jobsite schedules to allow for social distancing
  • 80% created new procedures
  • 44% shutdown some project job sites completely
  • 90% found it important to implement work-from-home scenarios

Respondents also identified COVID-dictated changes they feel have the best chance of being adopted long-term:

  • 78% Increased use of collaboration technology
  • 56% Increased use of safety technology
  • 37% New project bidding and contracting structures
  • 29% Change in the role of owner’s reps and construction managers
  • 27% A more robust or diversified global supply chain
  • 7% Other

Methodology

Procore invited a diverse cross-section of the owner and developer C-Suite (mainly VPs and above) to participate in a survey. The 41 respondents came from all company sizes – from N million dollar of annual capital projects all the way to N billion dollars – and include real estate developers with in-house GCs, school districts, oil companies, and everything in between.
