Streamlining B.C.’s Housing Market with the New Digital Building Permit Hub

In an effort to expedite home construction and address B.C.’s housing challenges, the Province is launching a digital Building Permit Hub. This innovative platform aims to streamline and standardize the local permitting processes, reducing delays and cutting through red tape. Premier David Eby highlighted the need for this one-stop solution to simplify permit submissions for homebuilders, local governments, and First Nations. The Hub will standardize requirements, check application completeness, and ensure BC Building Code compliance, ultimately saving money and accelerating construction.

Benefits of the Building Permit Hub

The new Building Permit Hub is designed to make the permitting process more efficient and user-friendly. Builders will benefit from:

  • Standardized Requirements: A uniform set of submission criteria across jurisdictions.
  • Automated Checks: The system will verify application completeness and compliance with key BC Building Code elements.
  • Faster Approvals: Streamlined processes will result in quicker permit reviews and approvals.

The Hub will also incorporate user feedback for continuous improvement, ensuring it evolves to meet the needs of builders and local authorities.

Pilot Program and Future Plans

Starting May 27, 2024, twelve local governments and two First Nations will pilot the Hub, with the goal of full implementation by summer. The Province aims to expand the Hub to include permits for secondary suites and accessory dwelling units, eventually covering all types of housing across BC.

This initiative is part of BC’s broader Homes for People action plan, which includes a $19-billion investment in housing. Since 2017, nearly 78,000 homes have been delivered or are underway. The digital permitting system is a key component of the Province’s strategy to lead in digital construction and permitting innovation.

By simplifying the permitting process, the Building Permit Hub will play a crucial role in addressing BC’s housing crisis, ensuring that more homes are built faster and more efficiently.
