She Builds Nation Report 2024: Illuminating Women’s Path in Construction

Lumber, a leader in construction workforce management solutions, recently unveiled its groundbreaking “She Builds Nation” report for 2024. This pivotal document, based on a survey of over 100 women leaders in construction, including owners, executives, and decision-makers, highlights both the challenges and opportunities for women in the sector.

A significant finding from the report is that 67% of participants pointed out the lack of gender-friendly safety equipment, with 85% raising concerns over the absence of maternity-specific gear. Moreover, 64% noted the unavailability of women’s restroom facilities on job sites, underlining a critical infrastructure shortfall for female construction workers.

Despite these challenges, the report paints an optimistic picture of the future, with 72% of respondents recognizing the growing opportunities for women’s advancement in construction. A smooth integration into the male-dominated industry was reported by 67% of the women surveyed, emphasizing the importance of an inclusive organizational culture.

Yet, the report also touches on areas needing improvement, such as pay parity, with 51% feeling that women have equal pay opportunities. Concerns regarding support systems and the retention of female talent in the industry were highlighted, pointing towards the need for targeted outreach, mentorship, flexible schedules, and comprehensive training to boost female representation and retention.

The survey reveals a strong sense of optimism among participants, with 66% acknowledging expanding career prospects for women in construction. This indicates a shift towards a more inclusive and equitable industry, driven by initiatives that promote diversity, equality, and empowerment for women.

Shreesha Ramdas, CEO and Founder of Lumber, emphasizes the report’s role in sparking a crucial dialogue and encouraging actions towards creating a more inclusive construction industry. Meghan Schoen, Director of Client Relations at Lumber, adds that the report underscores the importance of overcoming systemic barriers and cultivating environments where women can prosper.

The “She Builds Nation” report is a call to action, urging the construction industry to embrace diversity, ensure equality, and celebrate the integral role women play in shaping the future of construction. This insightful document is available for download, offering a comprehensive look at the strides made and the journey ahead for women in construction.
