His Royal Highness Crown Prince of Denmark opens new architecture exhibit at Bayside Toronto

March 4, 2019 (Toronto, ON) – His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark visited Bayside Toronto this morning as part of the opening of a new architecture exhibit by Danish firm 3XN. Located inside the Hines Tridel Bayside Toronto Presentation Centre, Waterfront Architecture: Placemaking and Context is an exploration of harbour cities and the dynamics between buildings, public spaces, urban circulation and the water’s edge.

Flanked by the Danish Minister for Energy, Utilities and Climate, Lars Christian Lilleholt, Danish Ambassador to Canada Thomas Winkler, as well as Minister Steve Clark, and representatives from Hines, Tridel and Waterfront Toronto, the Crown Prince also helped unveil plans for a new office tower at Bayside Toronto.

Designed by 3XN, T3 Bayside is conceived as a 10-storey, timber-constructed office tower by master developer Hines. A new scale model for the building is on display as part of the exhibition.

“We are very excited about the continuous collaboration and value creation among Danish and Canadian companies in respect to creating sustainable and livable cities,” says Danish Consul General Niels Tanderup Kristensen.

“From the beginning, the world has taken note of Waterfront Toronto’s unprecedented 2,000-acre revitalization plan—the largest such initiative currently underway anywhere. We are humbled to have His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark here to mark the opening of this exciting exhibit and the announcement of the first office project at Bayside Toronto. It’s a testament to the sustained attention Toronto’s waterfront revitalization is receiving worldwide that we are able to have the Crown Prince here with us today,” says Avi Tesciuba, Senior Managing Director, Hines Canada.

Nearly a decade has passed since Hines was named the master developer of Bayside Toronto, following an international competition by Waterfront Toronto. Hines brought Canada’s leading condominium developer Tridel on as its exclusive residential development partner at Bayside. Hines and Tridel are responsible for the successful launch of four residential projects: Aqualina, Aquavista, Aquabella and Aqualuna. 3XN’s notable design for Aquabella marked the Danish firm’s first project in North America and was quickly followed up by a striking, undulating form for Aqualuna.

“Tridel takes pride in helping introduce 3XN’s unique brand of contextually responsive design to North America with their work on two standout projects at Bayside,” says Leo DelZotto, President and CEO, Tridel. “It’s an honour to stand alongside the Crown Prince, as well as the Danish Ambassador to Canada, Minister Steve Clark, and Waterfront Toronto as we open this exhibit. We invite the public to the Bayside Presentation Centre to experience these designs firsthand and see how 3XN is helping shape waterfronts around the world.”

Waterfront Architecture: Placemaking and Context highlights 11 completed and in-progress waterfront projects by 3XN in Toronto, Sydney and Denmark. Each project is designed to amplify the best aspects of the local site and make a positive impact on the people that live and work there.

“Over half of 3XN’s work worldwide relates to water. Our own office is on the water and in Denmark there is more than 2,000 km of waterfront, so it’s almost impossible to have a site that doesn’t connect with the water in some ways,” says Kim Herforth Nielsen, Founding Principal, 3XN. “In harbour cities, the waterfront is always the most valuable and desirable area. This exhibit is meant to explore how we as designers can create multifunctional spaces that make the most of where everyone wants to be.”

The decision to have 3XN helm the design for T3 Bayside came after the studio emerged as the winner of a design competition set up specifically for the commercial component of Bayside’s master plan. While T3 Bayside is still in planning, with a scheduled appearance before the Waterfront Toronto Design Review Panel later this month, the impact 3XN has had on Toronto’s waterfront to-date is unmistakable.

“3XN’s work is guided by the belief that a project should provide a backdrop for shared interactions, and integrate social spaces that benefit all kinds of people, not just those that live and work there,” says Nielsen.

The exhibit will run until late spring and is free to the public. Exhibit hours are Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and weekends and holidays noon to 5 p.m. The Hines Tridel Bayside Presentation Centre is located at 261 Queens Quay East.
