Progress made on construction at University District in Calgary

The Calgary Sun reports that when the Alberta government declared stay-at-home orders, the construction industry was deemed to be an essential service, which kept an industry employed and got home buyers closer to moving into their new homes.

Like all construction sites, the University District benefitted from the designation, with work proceeding on-site since March and now at the point where the area’s Discovery Centre has re-opened.

“We are grateful to our construction and retail partners who have been able to keep momentum on our projects in a very safe manner over the past few months,” says James Robertson, CEO and president of West Campus Development Trust. “Our Discovery Centre has re-opened with regular hours, while still accommodating private or virtual appointments upon request. Of course, you can still venture online for virtual showsuite tours of Capella, Cambridge Manor, August, The Gramercy, IVY and Esquire.”

University District is a multi-use community located along 32nd Avenue and Shaganappi Trail northwest, west of the University of Calgary and north of the Children’s Hospital.

Development is proceeding on schedule, says Robertson.

“On the retail side, construction of the ALT Hotel has now progressed to the 14th floor, and Save-on-Foods is currently preparing their space for a late August opening. Market Wines, Scotiabank, Curious Hair Skin Body and Denim & Smith Barbershops are also planning to open in August,” he says. “On the residential side, August by Avi, The Brenda Strafford Foundation’s Cambridge Manor and Rhapsody by Gracorp will all have residents taking occupancy this fall.”

The University District Discovery Centre is open Tuesday to Friday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., weekends from noon to 5 p.m. and closed Monday.

“We’d like to acknowledge and thank all of our teams for their dedication and hard work, as well as the nearby health-care workers and frontline staff who have taken such good care of the community in recent months,” says Robertson.
