Pittsburgh’s Most Ambitious Infrastructure Projects Share a Common Thread: the Expertise and Vision of Brayman Construction

For years, Pittsburgh and the surrounding region have invested heavily to strengthen the infrastructure that keeps communities moving, connected, and safe. At the center of some of the largest and most impactful of these projects is Brayman Construction Corporation (Brayman). Brayman is a heavy civil and geotechnical contractor, headquartered in suburban Pittsburgh, with nearly 80 years of experience delivering complex infrastructure projects across the Eastern United States.

“With nearly 80 years in the industry, we have built a strong reputation for delivering complex infrastructure,” said Stephen Muck, Chairman and CEO of Brayman Construction Corporation. “That experience shows up in how we plan, how we execute, and how we consistently deliver for our customers on challenging work, backed by a top-to-bottom commitment to safety that is fundamental to how we operate.”

One of the region’s most significant environmental investments is ALCOSAN’s Clean Water Plan, a multi-billion-dollar program designed to reduce sewer overflows into the Ohio River and its tributaries while improving water quality across Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Building on Brayman’s commitment to environmental stewardship, the company plays a central role in the Ohio River Tunnel portion of the initiative, awarded to Steel City Tunnel Partners, a joint venture between The Lane Construction Corporation (Lane, Webuild Group) and Brayman. This project represents a major step forward for the region’s wastewater infrastructure and leverages Brayman’s extensive experience working in and around Pittsburgh’s river corridors.

Continuing their work along the region’s river corridors, Brayman is also helping to modernize the Montgomery Locks and Dam on the Ohio River, in partnership with Trumbull Corporation. This nearly $1 billion project will enhance the movement of goods by increasing the capacity, reliability, and safety at one of the region’s most important river lockages, supporting commercial traffic and national supply chains.

“Waterways are the lifeblood of our economy, supporting countless jobs and serving as the backbone of our supply chain. When these essential routes falter, the entire economy feels the impact,” said Shane Checkan, General Manager, Industry Terminal & Salvage, Waterways Committee Chairman, VP, Waterways Association of Pittsburgh. “Unfortunately, our current infrastructure is lagging behind, making it even more critical that we invest in and improve our waterways. These projects not only enhance efficiency but also ensure that we remain competitive in the global market. It’s crucial that we focus on maintaining our waterways because they are the silent engine driving our prosperity.”

Together, the ALCOSAN and Montgomery projects represent the two largest heavy civil construction efforts currently underway in the Pittsburgh region, capitalizing on Brayman’s significant regional role in delivering complex infrastructure.

Building on a Solid Track Record

Brayman’s current work builds on decades of experience delivering complex infrastructure for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) throughout the region. For more than 30 years, Brayman has worked alongside the USACE Pittsburgh District in Western Pennsylvania, notably with the Trumbull-Brayman Joint Venture (TBJV), which began in 2004 and continues today. Today, TBJV is nearing completion of the $281.4 million Charleroi Lock and Dam River Chamber, a key structure supporting year-round navigation between Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Fairmont, West Virginia.

Further south, Brayman’s longstanding partnership with the USACE Huntington District spans more than 25 years and showcases their expertise on some of the region’s most challenging projects. Among these efforts is the Bluestone Dam Safety Assurance Mega-Project along the New River in West Virginia, a $530 million, multi-phase initiative focused on dam safety and structural rehabilitation, currently underway and scheduled for completion in 2029.

Together, these projects reflect Brayman’s long-standing role in strengthening the region’s waterways and infrastructure systems that support commerce, improve efficiency, reduce truck traffic on highways, and advance environmental stewardship through investments that enhance navigation reliability and water quality.

Shaping Pittsburgh’s Future, One Project at a Time

Beyond the visible landmarks and cityscape, it’s the unseen work beneath our feet and along our rivers that propels Pittsburgh forward. Projects like those led by Brayman Construction don’t just improve individual communities; they lay the foundation for a stronger, more connected region.

As the city continues to evolve, Brayman’s commitment ensures that Pittsburgh’s waterways, transportation corridors, and critical systems are ready to face future challenges and support new growth. The legacy being built today will support generations to come, making Brayman an essential partner in shaping Pittsburgh’s renewed success.
