PCL Receives United Way’s Step Up for The Community Award

PCL Constructors Canada Inc. (Toronto) was recognized for its employee fundraising efforts and community support at United Way Halton & Hamilton’s annual Evening of Celebration. At the event held on April 11, 2024, at the Burlington Convention Centre, PCL Toronto was honored with the Step Up for the Community Award in recognition of their diligent efforts and dedication in running a successful fundraising campaign in support of United Way.

The Step Up for the Community Award is presented to United Way partners who recognize how the community has needed help more than ever. As one of eight organizations to receive this award, PCL Toronto stepped up by growing funds raised, volunteering their time, supporting United Way’s events and building awareness in the community, supporting thousands of vulnerable individuals who rely on crucial programs and services funded by the United Way.

“At PCL, we are passionate about fostering positive relationships with our communities, whether this be through impactful projects or supporting charitable agencies such as the United Way,” says Monique Buckberger, vice president and district manager and 2023 United Way campaign chair for PCL Toronto. “Receiving the Step Up for Community Award is a tremendous honor, and we are deeply grateful for the efforts, passion and commitment of our employees to give back to local communities.”

In its two-week Nothing Matters More: 2023 United Way campaign, PCL Toronto raised over $331,000 through employee pledges, special events and a corporate donation. Employees rallied together for their local communities by participating in events and activities including a dodgeball tournament, paper plane challenges, wine survivor and hygiene kit pack for distribution into the local community. Participation in United Way Halton & Hamilton’s annual Plane Pull saw PCL Toronto attempt to pull a 200,000-pound plane 50 feet across the Hamilton airport tarmac.

“With the steadfast support of partners like PCL Construction, we have achieved a historic milestone in raising $12.5 million, ensuring more support reaches those who need it most in our community. We are deeply grateful to PCL for your unwavering commitment to building a more equitable community for all,” said Brad Park, President and CEO of United Way Halton & Hamilton.

PCL’s Relationship with United Way

With 55 years of corporate partnership with United Way, PCL has a long history of engaging in local love. Overall, PCL collectively raised $6 million for United Way agencies across our company’s footprint in 2023.

Over the past four years, PCL Toronto has raised over $1 million for United Way. This includes its first-ever virtual campaign in 2020, where it raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for United Way in a time with pandemic limitations, and three consecutive Leading the Way awards from 2020-2023 for leadership giving.

As an employee-owned company, PCL values a strong culture that prioritizes supporting one another and its local communities. Led by the tagline “Together we build success,” PCL’s collaborative approach is a fundamental aspect in supporting the United Way, demonstrating the strength in working together to create lasting, worthwhile change in local neighborhoods.
