Ontario’s construction head protection requirements are changing. Learn when Type 2 hard hats and chin straps will be required, the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 protection, and how LIDGUARD® can help prepare your worksite for the July 1, 2027 implementation date.
Ontario is changing its construction head protection requirements. Beginning July 1, 2027, workers on Ontario construction projects who may be exposed to side impact hazards will require Type 2 protective headwear. A chin strap or another retention system will also be required when conditions could cause the headwear to become dislodged.
The changes are established by Ontario Regulation 112/26, which amends the Construction Projects Regulation, Ontario Regulation 213/91. The regulation was filed on April 20, 2026, giving employers, constructors and contractors time to assess their sites and prepare for the new requirements.
That preparation should begin now. Some major construction companies already require Type 2 head protection with chin straps, and the Canadian Construction Safety Council made Type 2 hard hats with integrated chin straps mandatory across its member construction sites as of July 1, 2026.
Here is what Ontario employers need to know and how to determine whether their current head protection program is ready.
