Landscape Ontario Horticultural Trades Association (Landscape Ontario) and the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) have announced a new partnership aimed at improving electrical safety awareness and code compliance across Ontario’s landscape and horticultural industry. The initiative focuses on helping contractors, arborists, and landscape professionals safely work around electrical infrastructure, including overhead powerlines and underground electrical systems.
The partnership will support safer jobsite practices by providing landscape professionals with clearer guidance on the application of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. The organizations will work together to reinforce key safety requirements, improve hazard recognition, and ensure consistent compliance throughout the landscaping sector.
According to Landscape Ontario Executive Director Joe Salemi, landscaping crews frequently work in complex environments near electrical infrastructure where safety risks can be significant. The collaboration with ESA is designed to help members apply electrical safety requirements in practical, real-world work settings.
As part of the initiative, ESA will provide industry-specific technical guidance, safety resources, and educational information tailored to landscape contractors and arborists. The partnership will help professionals identify electrical hazards on jobsites, determine when electrical permits are required, and ensure landscape lighting systems comply with Ontario safety regulations.
Landscape Ontario will distribute and promote this safety information through its communication channels, member programs, and industry outreach efforts.
The partnership also addresses growing concerns around workplace electrical hazards in Ontario’s construction and landscaping industries. According to ESA, powerline contacts account for 43% of occupational electrical fatalities in the province.
ESA President and CEO Josie Erzetic stated that working directly with landscaping contractors and arborists will help improve awareness of electrical safety requirements and reduce preventable electrical incidents that impact workers and the public.
The collaboration between Landscape Ontario and ESA supports broader industry efforts to reduce electrical contacts, improve safety education, and reinforce safe work practices as a shared responsibility across Ontario’s landscaping and horticultural sectors.
The partnership highlights the increasing importance of electrical safety training, regulatory compliance, and risk prevention as landscaping projects continue to intersect with critical electrical infrastructure across residential, commercial, and municipal worksites.
