Ontario Government Leverages Digital Twins for Key Infrastructure Projects

The Ontario government is embracing digital twin technology to enhance the delivery of crucial infrastructure projects, including hospitals, highways, and transit systems. This innovative approach aims to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.

Digital Twins: A Game-Changer for Infrastructure

Digital twins are sophisticated virtual models of physical assets, both existing and planned. By integrating these models into construction projects, stakeholders can identify and resolve potential issues before actual work begins. This proactive method significantly reduces the risk of delays and cost overruns, particularly in complex projects involving underground utilities like electrical, water, gas, and wastewater services.

Key Projects Testing Digital Twins

Ontario has selected three major projects to pilot digital twin technology:

  • Trillium Health Partners’ Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital Redevelopment
  • Ontario Place Rebuild
  • Eglinton Crosstown West Extension

These projects were chosen due to their intricate utility systems. By mapping these systems in a digital twin, the province aims to avoid costly utility conflicts, enhance worker safety, and ensure timely project completion.

Minister of Infrastructure’s Vision

“Our government is exploring innovative new technologies to help build critical infrastructure faster and more cost-effectively,” said Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure. “From start to finish, digital twins will help ensure that project partners involved in the building process have access to timely, accurate, and state-of-the-art data to advance the delivery of Ontario’s infrastructure for our growing communities.”

Significant Investment in Infrastructure

As part of the “Building a Better Ontario: 2024 Ontario Budget,” the province is investing over $190 billion in key infrastructure projects over the next decade. This substantial investment underscores Ontario’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to build a sustainable and efficient future.

By integrating digital twins into infrastructure planning and execution, Ontario is setting a new standard for innovation in construction, promising safer, more efficient, and cost-effective project delivery.
