The Canadian government is exploring innovative building designs to tackle the housing crisis while ensuring the safety of residents and first responders. As part of this effort, the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) has launched consultations with industry experts, provinces, territories, and accessibility and fire safety advocates to study the potential of multi-unit residential buildings with a single means of egress (exit pathway). These consultations aim to inform changes to the National Building Code, enabling more housing in underused urban areas.

The single egress design approach could maximize space and increase residential development, all while maintaining safety standards. Key topics in the consultations include reviewing Canadian and international building codes, evaluating building types, and analyzing fire safety requirements. The consultations will also consider best practices from other regions, such as British Columbia.

By addressing regulatory barriers and working with stakeholders, the government aims to accelerate the construction of affordable, sustainable housing for Canadians. These discussions will conclude in September 2024 and are expected to lead to vital changes in construction regulations, ensuring faster, cost-effective homebuilding.
