Northern Ontario Contractors Optimistic for 2024 Construction Season

Northern Ontario contractors are leading the province in optimism for the 2024 construction season, buoyed by a surge in mining and institutional projects. According to the Ontario Construction Secretariat (OCS) survey, 31% of contractors in this region anticipate an increase in work, even as the overall business outlook across Ontario cools slightly compared to 2023. Challenges such as skilled labor availability and rising costs of labor and materials persist across all regions, with supply chain issues beginning to resolve. The OCS highlights a growing interest in adopting new technologies to enhance productivity and lower costs, with a significant majority recognizing the importance of technology for the future of their business. The survey, which involved 500 contractors, reveals a strong positive sentiment towards the upcoming year, with unionized workplaces feeling particularly optimistic. A vast project pipeline across Ontario, including power generation, transit, and healthcare facilities, fuels this positivity. Despite concerns over rising costs, there is a clear trend towards growth and expansion, with contractors keen on hiring and investing in new technologies like Building Information Modelling and jobsite data collection apps to improve efficiency and support business success.
