Niagara Falls mulling ways to ensure construction sites are not eyesores

The City of Niagara Falls is looking at municipal policies that would require more esthetically pleasing fencing around active construction sites.

“We are looking at that through our building bylaw, we are looking at making modifications (to) the hoarding fencing requirements to make them a little more appeasing to the eye and to the general public,” said Kira Dolch, general manager of planning, building and development. “That should be brought forward in the new year.”

Dolch’s comments came during last week’s city council meeting, after Coun. Victor Pietrangelo said he continues to get complaints about “some of the larger holes in the ground that we have,” pointing to examples at Ferry Street and Stanley Avenue, and in the heart of Chippawa.

“I guess the resounding question is, can’t the city do anything about these holes that we have?” he asked. “I don’t want to speculate. I don’t want to say that they’re not going to get filled up, but is there a mechanism that we have that we can actually do that or not?”

Chief administrative officer Jason Burgess said the only thing the municipality can currently do is ensure the safety of construction sites from a bylaw standpoint.
