Amid a room of members and local dignitaries, the Niagara Construction Association (NCA) held its 2018 Annual General Meeting and announced its 2019 Board of Directors on Tuesday night (April 23) in St. Catharines, ON.
Carol Danis of PEC Roofing was honoured for her previous two years of leadership as President of the NCA as David Dick of Abe Dick Masonry was passed the presidential torch. Both are long-standing members of the NCA and roles within the Board.
The event also featured a keynote address from Ian Cunningham, President of the Council of Ontario Construction Associations (COCA). COCA is the largest and most representative group of ICI and heavy civil construction employers in Ontario and participates in a variety of coalitions, partnerships and committees to further the interests of their members and the construction industry and bring the concerns of its members to the attention of Queen’s Park.
At the AGM’s conclusion attendees enjoyed dinner together, catching up with colleagues and making new ones from both within the ICI (industrial, commercial and institutional) construction industry and from all four levels of local government. Joining the NCA Board of Directors and NCA members were dignitaries Vance Badawey, MP for Niagara Centre; Dean Allison, MP for Niagara West; Sam Oosterhoff, MPP Niagara West; Jennie Stevens, MPP for St. Catharines; St. Catharines’ Mayor Walter Sendzik; City of Thorold’s Mayor Terry Ugulini; Town of Lincoln’s Mayor Sandra Easton; Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Lord Mayor Betty Disero; Niagara Regional Councillor Gary Zalepa (Niagara-on-the-Lake); and St. Catharines Councillor Sal Sorrento (St. George’s). Special guests included City of Thorold’s CAO Manoj Dilwaria, St. Catharines Director of Economic Development Brian York and Economic Development Officer Sabrina Maselli, and Niagara College’s Vince Sheikh (Dean of Media, Trades & Technology), and NHBA Executive Officer Chuck McShane.
Stated Karin Sheldrick, General Manager of the NCA for the past 15 years, “The call today is for active ENGAGEMENT, committed LEADERSHIP and effective ADVOCACY. We have the board and staff to make this happen. Let’s do this together for the betterment of our Association and the Niagara region as a whole.”
The event was held in the Stone Mill Ballroom of Johnny Rocco’s, a fully-restored historic factory that once was a cotton factory of grand proportion and was redeveloped into a commercial plaza. Built in 1860, it was a pioneering cotton mill in the Dominion of Canada in its day. The restoration retained many of the factory’s original architectural features making for a striking and apropos venue for the NCA’s AGM.
