OnStation, a leader in digital stationing solutions for highway construction, has announced Active Worksite™, a new real-time safety technology designed to protect road workers by alerting drivers of their presence. Launching in March 2025, this system integrates with iCone to send anonymized worker location data to statewide traffic feeds and navigation apps like Waze and OEM vehicle dashboards. When a worker within 130 feet of a project centerline activates the feature in the OnStation App, nearby drivers receive a “workers ahead” notification, similar to existing alerts for speed zones and stalled vehicles.

Unlike traditional Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) plans, which rely on fixed schedules and static signage, Active Worksite™ dynamically adapts to real-time conditions, ensuring better visibility for unexpected work, including night and weekend shifts. It can also be used for non-stationed locations, such as shoulder maintenance and emergency repairs, providing an added layer of safety beyond conventional traffic control measures.

Highway construction zones remain some of the most dangerous workplaces. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data, over half of all highway worker fatalities in 2022 involved a worker on foot being struck by a vehicle. In 2023, the construction industry recorded the highest number of fatalities among private-sector jobs, with a fatality rate of 9.6 per 100,000 workers.

Nate Till of Brooks Construction emphasizes the importance of changing driver behavior, noting that when people realize humans are ahead, they slow down—similar to how speed zone alerts help prevent tickets. Brooks Construction has already adopted the technology, reinforcing the industry’s commitment to improving worksite safety.

Active Worksite™ is available for a flat fee in addition to any OnStation license.
