MILTON, ON (November 22, 2018) – PCL Constructors Canada Inc. (Toronto) is pleased to announce that the Milton District Hospital (MDH) expansion has attained Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold certification for new construction with the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC). LEED® is a nationally recognized certification program for the design, operation and construction of high performance green buildings. It is a certification granted to buildings which maintain a healthy indoor environment, operate with reduced greenhouse gas emissions and use energy efficiently.

The 330,000 sq. ft. expansion at MDH, which opened on October 1, 2017, achieved LEED® Gold certification after earning 60 credits in the green building rating system. LEED® buildings are certified within four levels; gold is the second highest level of achievement.

“Energy and environmental conservation served as a guiding principle in the planning and design for this expansion. We were committed to pursuing sustainable design strategies, with a goal to achieve a minimum LEED® Silver rating and are pleased to have surpassed our original goal by meeting the requirements to achieve Gold certification,” explained Bill Bailey, Halton Healthcare’s senior vice president of Redevelopment and Facilities. “Conserving environmental resources while creating state-of-the-art healing environments for patients and their families was very important to the whole team and we are extremely proud to be recognized as leaders in energy and sustainable building design.”

Halton Healthcare worked in partnership with Infrastructure Ontario, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and Plenary Health on the redevelopment project, which included the relocation and expansion of the Emergency Department, Surgical Services, Medical/Surgical Inpatient Units, Intensive Care Unit, Maternal Newborn Department, Diagnostic Imaging and support services including kitchen and central sterilization.

“The achievement of LEED® Gold certification on this project is yet another example of seamless collaboration between the public and private sector to surpass our project goals under demanding timelines,” said John McKendrick, executive vice president at Infrastructure Ontario. “Infrastructure Ontario congratulates our partners at Halton Healthcare, Plenary Group and PCL, as well as the community of Milton, who will benefit from this project for generations to come.”

Gold certification reflects the considerable energy efficiency and sustainable features that went into the design and construction of the expansion, including:

  • More than 86% of construction and demolition waste diverted from landfill
  • High efficiency faucets, toilets, showers and urinals installed to reduce water consumption
  • Low-VOC materials including paints, adhesives, coatings, sealants and flooring
  • Mechanical systems that do not use ozone depleting refrigerants to cool the building
  • Automated window shades and building systems for thermal comfort
  • A combination of vegetated roof and reflective roofing materials
  • Designated parking spots with charging stations for low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles

In March 2015, Plenary Health was awarded the contract to design, build, finance and maintain the hospital’s expansion with PCL Construction breaking ground on the project in early Spring. Throughout the fast-paced 25 months of construction, 600 workers contributed to the project’s industry-leading safety record. The project achieved total completion within seven months of substantial completion.

“As Canada’s leading general contractor, PCL is known for achieving and exceeding our partners’ sustainable goals for their projects,” said Kelly Wallace, vice president and district manager at PCL Constructors Canada Inc. (Toronto). “With a shared commitment to reducing carbon footprint and improving quality of life, we were honoured to build Halton Healthcare’s vision for Milton District Hospital, and congratulate everyone involved in creating a successful outcome that will enable the hospital to provide exemplary patient experiences for years to come.”

“Congratulations to the entire Milton District Hospital team on surpassing its LEED® Silver target and achieving LEED® Gold certification. Plenary is proud to invest in infrastructure solutions that offer long-term environmental benefits to the communities in which we live and work,” concluded Angela Taylor, group head – Buildings Division, Plenary Group.
