The City of London has deployed a massive drilling machine to tunnel under Wharncliffe Road as part of a $7.3 million project aimed at increasing sewer capacity. This micro tunneling machine, operated by Erritt Construction, will enhance the trunk sewer between Downtown and the Greenway Wastewater Treatment Plant, accommodating housing development and handling increased wet weather flow. The machine, weighing over 80,000 lbs and equipped with 10 cutting disks, operates by using fresh water to break up ground, separating solids and reintroducing water into the system. This project, deemed critical by Mayor Josh Morgan, will triple sewer capacity, alleviate bottlenecks, support infill development, and improve environmental management during heavy rains.
