mcCallumSather ushers in a new era of growth and innovation with the acquisition of Edge Architects

mcCallumSather is pleased to announce that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Edge Architects. The transaction will be completed on January 1, 2024, and the combined firm will operate under the name of mcCallumSather. Edge Founders Matthew Bolen and Michael Trussell will join mcCallumSather as Managing Principals.

A rising force in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, Edge Architects has a diverse portfolio of multi-residential, commercial, and healthcare buildings. The firm is especially known for its expertise in the design of mass timber structures and prefabricated buildings.

“We are delighted to welcome Edge Architects to our firm”, said mcCallumSather Executive Director and Principal Joanne McCallum. “By joining forces with Matt, Mike and their team, we strengthen our position in one of Canada’s most vibrant and fastest-growing markets, where we can apply our architectural, mechanical engineering and interior design expertise to laboratories, healthcare facilities, civic buildings, post-secondary learning environments, multi-unit residential properties, and affordable housing projects. We are particularly excited about bringing innovative mass timber design, modularization, and project delivery solutions to these areas.”

“We are proud to be joining forces with mcCallumSather,” said edge Co-Founder and Principal Michael Trussell. With this merger, we will significantly enhance our competitiveness and position ourselves for the pursuit of larger and more complex flagship projects, enabling us to apply our expertise to a wider range of challenges than ever before”. Edge Co-Founder and Principal Matthew Bolen added: “This collaboration empowers us to invest more in research and development, further refining our expertise in sustainable design, as well as in cutting-edge areas like mass timber, modular construction, and other technical fields where we excel.”

For over 20 years, mcCallumSather has delivered innovative projects in Southern Ontario, earning recognition for its environmental and technological leadership. Some of the firm’s notable achievements include the first LEED Gold Certified project under the Canada Green Building Council, the first building in Canada to gain Zero Carbon Building Standard Certification in both design and performance categories, the largest LiveLab of its kind at the McMaster Institute for Music and the Mind, and the only open-access full scale press and manufacturing equipment center at Western University, a first in North America. The firm’s mechanical engineering team has developed unique expertise in the design of highly sustainable mechanical systems for complex building typologies and completed deep energy retrofits and decarbonization programs for clients. The interiors team continues to deliver precedent setting commercial, institutional and residential environments.
