Massive Fire in Vancouver: Evacuations and Crane Collapse Amidst Destruction

A massive fire in Vancouver’s Dunbar neighborhood has displaced dozens of residents after it engulfed a nearly completed six-storey, wood-frame apartment building and spread to nearby homes. The fire, which started at 3477 West 41st Avenue at around 6:30 p.m., caused a construction crane to collapse across the street, cutting trolley lines and power, and resulting in outages for over 760 customers. Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim described the scene as “incredibly dangerous,” with embers igniting secondary fires and explosions following the crane collapse. Firefighters faced multiple fires, with flaming embers impacting nine homes, leaving two uninhabitable. Evacuations took place for homes on both sides of West 41st Avenue between Blenheim and Collingwood streets, as well as homes on West 40th Avenue. Displaced residents were directed to a nearby school for assistance. Emergency crews from Richmond and Burnaby supported Vancouver’s stretched resources, which were already dealing with another fire in an abandoned apartment complex in east Vancouver. Despite the intense efforts, several firefighters sustained minor injuries, and by 9:30 p.m., the main fire was under control. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
