Making Buildings More Efficient: How One Canadian Company is Working Towards Change

It might surprise you to know that a company you’ve probably never heard of plays a central role in not only helping Canadians power their homes, but also in helping to make buildings more efficient.

For more than 35 years, Trilliant — a global provider of leading Smart Grid and Smart City IoT solutions — has been part of the Canadian energy industry, quietly building and deploying solutions from offices based in Ontario, Quebec, and around the world. Over time, they have secured 60 patents and licensed more than 80, many of which were developed in Canada and used across the country. The company’s solutions also have the ability to integrate with many of the greener, eco-friendly technologies that builders are interested in to meet the needs of customers, such as solar.

While they aren’t the producers of electricity — they leave that to the generation companies — they do help provide the technology that allows utilities (as well as municipalities and building owners) to safely deliver, manage and service the infrastructure that powers homes, schools, or businesses.

Supporting buildings of the future

In 2006, Trilliant pioneered the first two-way wireless utility management system at a time when all leading metering companies said it wouldn’t be possible. Then, when utilities needed a technology partner to incubate and launch new innovations in distributed generation, combined heat and power units, and utility management of residential and commercial buildings, they turned to Trilliant as the experts.

Today, this very same technology is used worldwide and the company continues to innovate.

In Canada in particular, Trilliant is working with builders and developers of multi-residential and commercial establishments to help them better understand how their buildings are operating, what they can do to make them more efficient and provide them with the data they need to do so. In 2020, Trilliant acquired rights to Quadlogic’s multi-tenant panel and ANSI-based metering for Canada and international markets, enabling the company to augment its leadership position in providing custom-tailored and turn-key metering services. Smart Buildings lead to smarter cities, and Trilliant is a key player in this space, providing the solutions and expertise required to enable smart applications.

Made in Canada, for Canada

The company’s decision to double down on its Canadian operations came at the right time.

“The pandemic underscored the importance for Trilliant to refocus our priorities to both existing and new potential customers in the Canadian marketplace,” says Steven Lupo, Trilliant’s Managing Director for Canada. “Not only is our technology developed here, but the majority of our manufacturing is also done in Canada. The pandemic has certainly introduced unforeseen issues with supply of essential equipment and services necessary for the efficient and safe delivery of electricity to customers. We are uniquely positioned to assist with that.”

Lupo hits on a problem that isn’t unique to his industry. Global supply chain disruptions have reignited conversations around “Canada First” purchasing, and while the idea of shopping local isn’t new, larger companies have been expanding the notion beyond Main Street and into the macro economy.

“Not only do we have engineers and developers locally based, but Trilliant also has an entire ecosystem of Canadian partners and suppliers,” says Lupo. “That has been a saving grace for us over the last year and has enabled us to continue delivering critical equipment and services.”

While the company wasn’t spared from the negative impacts of COVID, they are seeing a rebound in the market and are currently hiring in several key areas. Further, the company recently announced the acquisition of an  analytics and data services company, and at the end of 2020, debuted a new solution that is well-positioned for the Canadian market.

“The global economy is starting to rebound, but we cannot forget the lessons that we all learned during 2020,” he says. “Trilliant has the unique ability to develop truly disruptive solutions in the energy space as we can continue to grow and hone our Canadian talent in full partnership with our customers.
