Congratulations to Mr. Hedley Thomas, President and founder of Stanmore Equipment Ltd., for the celebration of his 90th birthday, and the achievement of Stanmore reaching its 60th year in business, a tremendous milestone that exemplifies who Stanmore Equipment Ltd. is.

Stanmore began in a small store in the town of Agincourt, Ontario and sold lawn and garden equipment to local homeowners and businesses. Hedley’s wife, Mercedes Thomas, assisted with the day-to-day business operations, monitoring the books and making sure that the office was kept in order. Together they formed the foundation of a strong, dedicated business, serving the local Toronto market.

The main focus of Stanmore during this time in the early 70s was the sale of forklifts. The Toronto housing industry was growing rapidly and Stanmore was a large supplier of forklifts and industry related equipment.

Hedley Thomas saw a need for a new type of four-wheel drive, Rough Terrain Forklift, and began to design and build a new forklift for the local Toronto market. He decided to call his new machine “Load Lifter”. The first model, the 4400 series was an instant success and the manufacturing side of the business grew to having machines sold across North America.

In 1985, Hedley and Mercedes’s three sons, Paul, David, and Donald became more Involved in the business and shared different roles within the company.

Stanmore is now one of the largest family owned, independent Rental & Service providers in Canada.
