Luminar Technologies, a global leader in automotive LiDAR technology, has announced a strategic collaboration with Caterpillar Inc. to integrate its advanced LiDAR systems into Caterpillar’s next-generation autonomous vehicles. This partnership marks a significant step toward the future of industrial automation, with a focus on safety, efficiency, and productivity in heavy-duty environments.

LiDAR—short for Light Detection and Ranging—is a critical technology for enabling autonomous navigation. It operates by emitting pulsed laser light to scan the environment, creating high-resolution 3D maps that identify objects, obstacles, and terrain features in real-time. Luminar’s high-performance LiDAR system, Iris, will be incorporated into Caterpillar’s Cat® Command for hauling—specifically designed for use in quarry and aggregate operations. The Cat® off-highway trucks will be outfitted with two Iris LiDAR sensors and a custom integration system built exclusively for Caterpillar’s rugged applications.

Caterpillar, a pioneer in autonomous machinery with over 30 years of investment in automation, has already deployed autonomous trucks on three continents. These machines have collectively traveled more than 334 million kilometers and moved over 9.3 billion tonnes of material—testament to Caterpillar’s long-standing leadership in autonomous operations.

Jaime Mineart, CTO and Senior Vice President of Integrated Components and Solutions at Caterpillar, emphasized the value of autonomy in enhancing customer outcomes: “We’ve invested in autonomy and automation for more than 30 years, and we’ve seen how it adds value for our customers in terms of safety, productivity, and efficiency.”

Austin Russell, CEO and Founder of Luminar, highlighted the broader implications of this partnership: “This new partnership with Caterpillar, the global leader in industrial equipment, has the opportunity to be a spearhead for the next industrial revolution of automation. Now that Luminar has successfully executed for automotive series production, we’re able to branch out to adjacent markets with a shared mission. Together, we look forward to saving lives and enhancing profitability for CAT customers around the world.”

This collaboration demonstrates how automotive-grade LiDAR technology is expanding into adjacent industrial markets, driving the next wave of smart, autonomous machinery. It also reinforces Caterpillar’s commitment to innovation and Luminar’s growing influence beyond the automotive sector.
