Local construction leaders celebrated at 2019 VICA Awards for building excellence

Victoria, BC (May 1, 2019) – The Vancouver Island Construction Association is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2019 VICA Awards, which recognize the work its members do to build and regenerate our local communities: the universities, hospitals, historic sites, airports, and condominiums.

“We are proud to showcase and celebrate the contributions and achievements of VICA member companies with our inaugural awards,” says Rory Kulmala, CEO of the Vancouver Island Construction Association. “This year, we saw over 50 exceptional submissions. The 2019 VICA Award recipients have demonstrated their commitment to our industry and local communities by embracing quality, innovation, and client satisfaction.”

Among the recipients is Victoria-based Rob Tournour Masonry (RTM), who took home the VICA Member of the Year Award for their philanthropic efforts both locally and abroad. Another Brick in Nepal is one such initiative, which sees Rob travelling to Nepal with a small team to help the Nepalese rebuild schools after a devastating earthquake in 2015. RTM also supports local programs and clubs throughout the year.

“Rob Tournour Masonry strongly believes that it is our responsibility to support the arts, community sports teams and, for over 15 years, the Boys and Girls Club of Victoria,” says Rob Tournour, president of RTM. “We have also always believed in promoting the masonry trade and construction in general through our involvement with VICA and we are humbled and very proud to be the recipients of the first ever VICA Member of The Year award.”

The General Contractor Over $10 Million was awarded to Kinetic Construction for Yello on Yates at 819 Yates Street in Victoria while the General Contractor Up To $10 Million was awarded to Saywell Contracting for the Nuutsumuut Lelum (Nanaimo Passive House) project. The Trade Contractor Award was presented to Olde Country Masonry for the Union Club Building Renovation.

“As constructors, everything we do, the energy we expend, and the efforts we make, are converted into a physical entity that remains for many years to come,” says Tom Plumb, president of Kinetic Construction. “When we get the opportunity to help create a building that adds to the city, provides a great use, and is aesthetically pleasing, it is a further reward for us and it’s wonderful when it’s recognized by your peers and the community.”
