Labour dispute involving construction of NSCC Sydney campus has been resolved

A labour dispute between two unions representing workers in the construction of the Nova Scotia Community College waterfront campus in Sydney has been resolved.

Representatives of the two unions have confirmed that the jurisdictional dispute under Section 52 of the Trade Union Act, first filed last Tuesday, was resolved on Thursday.

“It was more of a misunderstanding than anything so it was nothing serious,” said Jack Wall, the business manager for the complainant in the case, the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association.

The jurisdictional dispute between the sheet metal workers and the Labourers’ International Union of North America Local 1115 concerned the waterproofing of foundations below grade including the preparation of the wall and associated work using waterproofing materials at the construction site of the new NSCC waterfront campus, according to an interim order from the Nova Scotia Labour Board issued on April 13.

The order said that a labour board officer’s investigation had confirmed that a jurisdictional dispute did exist and a work stoppage was likely to occur as a result, however representatives of both unions have confirmed that everything has now been resolved.

“One guy thought the particular type of work belonged to one trade and the other felt that it belonged to another trade,” said Wall.
