Kawartha Lakes Construction the big winner at the Kawartha Home Builders Association Housing Design Awards

As reported in The Peterborough Examiner, a Lakefield-based design-build firm swept the awards Friday at a local home builders association celebration.

Kawartha Lakes Construction (KLC) took home seven awards during the Peterborough and the Kawartha Home Builders Association Housing Design Awards at The Venue.

It’s the most accolades the company has achieved at one event.

Emily Craigen, marketing co-ordinator of KLC, said the design awards are the industry’s version of the Oscars.

“It’s always a fun opportunity for our team to get dressed up and go out,” she said, adding the attire is typically “diamonds and jeans.”

KLC builds new home and custom cottages and does commercial projects, renovations and decks.

While the designing event is about celebrating successes, it’s also a chance to mingle with others in the field, Craigen said. “It’s as much an internal celebration as it is getting to see our industry buddies — it’s great to see what everybody else is up to as well.”

KLC turned 30 last year, commemorating the anniversary with a 30 Acts for 30 Years campaign. The goal was to complete 30 charitable acts in 2018.

That initiative earned the firm the best ad campaign award.

Craigen pointed out a few highlights from the campaign, including a turtle challenge, a women’s build and a new post-secondary scholarship.

The turtle challenge had employees stopping to help turtles cross the road. For each turtle saved, $10 was donated to the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. About 30 turtles got a helping hand.

Women working at KLC participated in Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build on Curve Lake First Nation. The group was the top fundraising team, garnering about $5,000 for the project.
