Homes by Avi Makes Hail-Resistant Roofing Standard on New Alberta Homes

Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has recognized Homes by Avi as the first large-volume homebuilder in Alberta to make hail-resistant roofing standard on all new single-family homes, effective August 1, 2026.

The move is designed to improve home resilience against severe hail and wind while potentially reducing repair costs and insurance claims in one of Canada’s most weather-affected provinces.

Hail-Resistant Roofing Could Reduce Insurance Costs

Hail-resistant roofing is engineered to better withstand impacts from severe storms. According to IBC, combining hail-resistant roofing and siding can potentially reduce home insurance premiums by up to 50% in high-risk areas such as Calgary, depending on the insurer and property.

Aaron Sutherland, Vice-President, Pacific and Western at IBC, said hail-resistant materials should become standard practice for new homes in hail-prone regions to improve resilience and help address insurance affordability.

Alberta Faces Growing Hail Damage

The initiative comes as Alberta continues to experience significant losses from severe weather. IBC reports that the province has experienced a major hailstorm every year for the past decade, resulting in more than $8 billion in insured damage.

Frequent catastrophic weather events are placing additional pressure on home, auto and business insurance costs while increasing the importance of resilient construction practices.

IBC Calls for Stronger Resilient Construction Measures

IBC is encouraging governments and the construction industry to expand measures that protect homes from hail damage. Recommendations include restoring Calgary’s Resilient Roofing Rebate Program, requiring hail-resistant roofing and siding on new construction in high-risk areas, and improving severe-hail notification services.

Some insurers are already providing financial incentives for homeowners who retrofit properties with hail-resistant materials.

Homes by Avi’s decision demonstrates how builders can incorporate climate-resilient construction directly into new housing rather than relying solely on retrofits after homes are built.
