Halifax is updating its accessibility guidelines to improve sidewalk navigation around construction sites for those with mobility challenges. The proposed changes, aimed for final council approval, include ensuring temporary ramps have a gentle slope and pedestrian paths around construction are wide enough for wheelchairs and walkers, with detectable barriers for cane users. The initiative, developed in consultation with community advocates and professionals, seeks to prevent injuries and improve safety for all pedestrians, including those with visual impairments, seniors, and parents with strollers. Enforcement and penalties for non-compliance were highlighted as crucial for effectiveness.
