Georgina’s Habitat for Humanity homes in need of volunteers

Construction resumes at Habitat for Humanity’s Dalton Road affordable housing project.

But to ensure the six-unit affordable townhouse complex is completed on time for expecting families, Habitat for Humanity GTA is in great need of volunteers.

It was put on hold at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and has now reopened under new health and safety protocols.

These include screening, mandatory face coverings and a limit of 10 volunteers on site at any time.

“Safety is one of our guiding principles and is ingrained in our organizational culture,” said Wayne Dempsey, Habitat’s vice-president of construction.

The organization is cleaning and sanitizing tools after each use and volunteers are encouraged to bring their own steel-toed boots, safety glasses, gloves and mask if they can.

No prior construction experience is necessary.

The townhouse unit will be home to six working, lower-income families currently in need of a decent home.

Habitat is appealing to the community to help get the job done to ensure families can move in on time.

“Becoming a Habitat homeowner will open up a whole new world for (us),” said Greer Atkinson, mother of three and future Habitat homeowner at the Dalton Road project.

“It will do so much for my girls’ sense of personal efficacy and most importantly it will improve our family’s overall well-being.”

The complex on Dalton Road is Habitat’s largest and only multi-unit building project in York Region.
