As Ontario’s construction sector experiences unprecedented growth, the need for certified building officials has reached a critical stage. To address this shortage, George Brown College (GBC) has opened applications for the Fall 2025 intake of its Building Code Skills Development Program, a free, 16-week training initiative designed to fast-track new talent into these essential public sector roles.

Developed in collaboration with the Ontario Building Officials Association (OBOA) and GBC’s Community Partnerships Office, the program blends technical training with practical career preparation, equipping learners with the skills and credentials required to safeguard Ontario’s building standards and support its rapid urban development.

Graduates earn a Building Officials Fundamentals Certificate from GBC and are prepared to write the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing’s BCIN House 2024 and General Legal/Process 2024 exams. Successful candidates can then earn OBOA’s Building Code Qualified (Housing) certification — a credential highly valued by municipal employers across Ontario.

The program offers:

  • Two 2025 start dates: September 15 and November 24.
  • 4 weeks of workplace culture, communication, and job readiness training.
  • 12 weeks of technical Building Code instruction via GBC’s School of Continuing Education.
  • 1 year of ongoing career support, including job search assistance, networking opportunities, and access to OBOA’s exclusive municipal job listings.

“This program is about more than just training; it’s about real pathways to employment,” said Joseph Sirianni, Director of Corporate Training at GBC’s Centre for Continuing Education. “We’re proud to offer training that meets the evolving needs of Ontario’s building industry while also building meaningful careers.”

GBC’s leadership in building code education is well established. Since 2015, the College has been the official training provider for building code courses and manuals on behalf of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. Its longstanding partnership with OBOA ensures that graduates are not only job-ready but also connected to a professional network that supports their career development beyond graduation.

With Ontario’s infrastructure and housing demands climbing, the Building Code Skills Development Program provides a timely and strategic solution — creating skilled professionals who can immediately contribute to safe, sustainable growth across the province.
