Geo Week 2027 Keynote Explores Digital Twin Preservation of Fallingwater

Geo Week 2027 will open with a keynote exploring how 3D scanning, Building Information Modeling (BIM), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and digital twin technology are helping preserve Fallingwater, one of the world’s most celebrated architectural landmarks.

The presentation, From Legacy to Longevity: Digitally Preserving 90 Years of Fallingwater, is scheduled for February 23, 2027, at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The keynote will examine an ambitious digital preservation initiative designed to protect the architectural integrity, cultural significance and long-term legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece.

Preserving Fallingwater Through Digital Technology

As Fallingwater approaches its second century, preserving the historic structure presents complex challenges. Aging construction materials, changing environmental conditions and evolving preservation requirements demand innovative approaches that respect Wright’s original architectural vision.

A multidisciplinary team has undertaken a digital preservation initiative combining GIS, advanced reality capture and digital twin technologies to create a comprehensive, data-driven representation of the landmark.

The initiative supports the documentation, interpretation, protection and long-term stewardship of Fallingwater, demonstrating how digital technologies can contribute to the preservation of culturally significant buildings.

“Preserving Fallingwater was never just about capturing the building. It was about capturing what makes it extraordinary,” said Touf Hassoun, President and CEO of Case Technologies.

From 3D Scanning and BIM to Digital Twins

A central focus of the Geo Week keynote will be the technological journey from physical reality capture to the development of a digital twin.

Presenters will explain how 3D scanning and Building Information Modeling help document Fallingwater’s architectural characteristics and establish a digital foundation for preservation activities.

By integrating these technologies with GIS and digital twin capabilities, the project team is developing a more comprehensive representation of the building and its surrounding environment.

The initiative extends beyond conventional geometric documentation, seeking to capture the atmosphere, experience and distinctive qualities that make Fallingwater an internationally recognized architectural landmark.

Attendees will gain insight into the technical challenges, project workflows and innovations involved in translating a historically significant structure into a detailed digital environment.

Digital Twins and the Future of Historic Preservation

Digital twin technology offers new opportunities for architectural preservation by connecting detailed digital representations with information that supports building documentation and long-term asset management.

For historic landmarks such as Fallingwater, these capabilities can help preservation teams better understand complex building conditions, organize critical information and support informed decisions about future conservation efforts.

The Fallingwater initiative also demonstrates the potential for digital technologies to support architectural storytelling and cultural heritage interpretation.

By combining physical documentation with contextual information, digital preservation projects can create new ways for future generations to understand and experience important architectural achievements.

The Geo Week keynote will explore these opportunities while highlighting lessons applicable to other historic buildings and preservation initiatives.

Industry Experts to Present Fallingwater Preservation Project

The opening keynote will feature three professionals directly involved in the preservation initiative:

  • Justin Gunther, Vice President of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and Director of Fallingwater
  • Mark Dietrick, Director of Services, Case Technologies
  • Touf Hassoun, President and CEO, Case Technologies

Together, the presenters will discuss the project’s development, technical challenges and broader implications for the geospatial, architecture, engineering and construction industries.

Carla Lauter, Senior Content Manager at Geo Week, said the project illustrates how advanced technology can capture not only a building’s physical structure but also the qualities that make a place significant.

Geo Week 2027 Highlights Geospatial Innovation

Geo Week 2027 will bring together professionals working with geospatial technologies, reality capture, BIM and related digital solutions.

The Fallingwater opening keynote will demonstrate how these technologies can be applied to complex preservation challenges while supporting collaboration between architectural, engineering and cultural heritage professionals.

Attendees interested in exploring the project can review the Geo Week conference program and speaker lineup.

Digital Insider Access will also be available as an addition to the Full Conference Pass, providing access to keynote videos and recorded conference sessions after the event.
