In Ottawa, the prolonged process of selling surplus federal buildings for housing conversion is causing frustration among politicians and developers. Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) listed 10 properties for sale in May, but eight months later, none have been marketed. Yasir Naqvi, Liberal MP for Ottawa Centre, and others are urging for quicker action to address the city’s housing crisis and rejuvenate the downtown area. The properties are still undergoing due diligence, including environmental, heritage, and legal assessments. Despite the potential these buildings hold for housing development, the lengthy disposal process and required consultations, including with Indigenous groups and other federal departments, are slowing progress. The need for expedited action is echoed by various stakeholders who see these properties as key to revitalizing downtown Ottawa and addressing its housing shortage.
