First-ever B.C. conference dedicated to first-responder mental health welcomes 350 participants

Richmond, B.C. (Jan. 24, 2019): A two-day interactive conference in Richmond on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 is the first ever in British Columbia to welcome first responders, their leadership, and their communities to discuss occupation-specific mental health challenges and create meaningful change in their organizations.

First responders such as police officers, firefighters, paramedics and dispatchers experience occupational traumas and stressors that are unique, putting them at higher risk of mental health injuries. The multi-agency B.C. First Responders’ Mental Health Committee, chaired by WorkSafeBC, is bringing together 350 first responders and mental-health professionals, researchers, and government representatives to talk about these specific challenges.

Over the course of two days, 34 speakers and panelists will share their knowledge and experience on topics ranging from peer support and return-to-work strategies to the latest research in the field. Highlights include renowned retired fire chief Bobby Halton on understanding stigma and mental health for first responders, and Dr. Stephanie Conn, a psychologist and former police officer, on how to build resilience.
