It turns out West Perth officials didn’t need to worry about their administration building project being more than their projections due to the rising cost of construction and materials, as they awarded the tender to a familiar contractor – Domm Construction Ltd., for just over $3.5 million.

Domm Construction, the contractor who built the West Perth fire station next door to the proposed building, was the lowest of seven tender bids submitted for the project. The tenders were publicly opened July 14 and reviewed by their engineer, Nelson Dawley, prior to acceptance by council July 19.

The administration building is scheduled to begin in less than a month, Aug. 23, and be completed in 46-weeks, or mid-July of 2022.

“We are very pleased with the financial amount and the quality of the tender documents that we had,” said West Perth CAO Jeff Brick. “It generated a very good bid package which allowed for good submissions that were very easy to review objectively and transparently … and I think that’s what you want to see from any kind of public procurement process.”

The building subcommittee did a lot of hard work to get it to this point, Brick added, commending the assistance of Dawley through the process.

“I think this is a very critical project for this municipality moving forward, first for just continuing with good governance for the community and having a good meeting space and having good facilities, but secondly as we approach the Jan. 1, 2025 deadline where we have an obligation to have an accessible building I think this is a significant moral obligation for the municipality to fulfill the need to have a community accessible space,” he added.
