Experts Call for Resilient Building Materials After Calgary Hailstorm

A recent hailstorm in north Calgary left tens of thousands of homes with damaged roofs and shredded siding, raising concerns about the durability of current building materials in the face of increasingly severe weather. Experts like Julian Brimelow of the Northern Hail Project and Ward 5 Coun. Raj Dhaliwal advocate for updating building codes to require more resilient materials, such as fibre cement siding, particularly in hail-prone areas. However, cost and regulatory hurdles, including the finalized 2025 federal building code, pose challenges. While some builders, like Logel Homes, already use more durable materials, affordability remains a significant barrier for widespread adoption.
