Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway is experiencing severe congestion due to lane closures for critical rehabilitation work, affecting traffic between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue for an expected duration of three years. Ontario’s Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria, in collaboration with the City of Toronto, is exploring options to expedite the construction process, including the potential for 24-hour construction activities. Sarkaria expressed a willingness to utilize any necessary tools to minimize disruption and accelerate the project, which involves replacing 700 meters of elevated bridge surface and rehabilitating supporting structures. While the construction is managed by the city, the province is funding the work as part of a broader transfer of road ownership. Efforts to balance the speed of construction with the impact on local residents have led to current work hours set from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday to Saturday, with some quieter work proposed for nighttime and Sundays. The project is part of a larger, decade-old plan to rehabilitate various sections of the aging expressway, aiming to improve infrastructure and traffic management while considering the quality of life for nearby residents.
