The Regional Municipality of Durham, in collaboration with Windfall Ecology Centre, has unveiled the Durham Greener Buildings Program. This pioneering initiative aims to support the building sector’s journey towards climate action and sustainability. Durham Greener Buildings, a benchmarking and disclosure program, assists building owners in joining the provincial Energy and Water Reporting Benchmarking (EWRB) program. This participation helps in measuring, reporting, and acting on efficiency and conservation opportunities.
The program has an ambitious target: to achieve 70% participation, equating to 450 buildings in the Durham Region by 2026. Over three years, these structures will provide vital energy performance data, enabling the tracking of usage, pinpointing of efficiency opportunities, and comparison with similar buildings. Additionally, the program expects to enroll over 600 public sector buildings.
To further boost engagement and sustainable practices, Durham Greener Buildings has introduced an awards and recognition competition. This contest encourages reductions in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, fostering collaboration, education, and innovation among building owners and property managers. Participation in the competition is free and aimed at those committed to climate action and implementing responsible energy management.
The program is administered by Windfall Ecology Centre, a non-profit with extensive experience in home energy retrofits. As a part of Durham’s Community Energy Plan, Durham Greener Buildings Program plays a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with Durham Regional Council’s climate emergency declaration.
