Dubai Approves Kryton’s Crystalline Waterproofing as the Sole Protection for Substructures

After years of rigorous testing, Kryton International Inc.’s Krystol Internal Membrane™ (KIM®) is now the only crystalline admixture approved by the Dubai Municipality (DM) to waterproof substructures in Dubai without other waterproofing methods.

This initiative was in response to the DM’s crystalline waterproofing restrictions in 2016. Seeing crystalline technology as unproven at the time, the DM had released a circular directing Dubai builders to not use crystalline waterproofing materials on their own for belowground applications. Builders were directed to instead add other waterproofing technologies, such as a membrane or rubberized bitumen.

After some initial consultation with the DM, a new circular was published two years later stating that crystalline waterproofing could be used on its own so long as it qualified under strict conditions.

“Using two systems can be prohibitive, and in many cases, unnecessary,” says Kari Yuers, President and CEO of Kryton. “However, a robust evaluation process does make sense as not all crystalline products are the same.”

To ensure that prospective products could meet those conditions, Kryton worked with the DM to develop evaluation protocols. These included both laboratory and field testing to validate that crystalline waterproofing was effective, reliable, and safe.

Kryton’s KIM system passed laboratory and field performance tests and excelled in a demonstration project to satisfy all protocols required of the new DM standard and secure the DM’s final approval.

“From there, we became the first — and only — company to provide an integral waterproofing system that can be used as the sole waterproofing protection in underground applications in Dubai,” adds Kari. “I want to congratulate everyone at Kryton who worked on the project. This is a great accomplishment. Over 40 years ago, we introduced the first crystalline admixture to the world. After decades of proven experience on projects across the globe, we were confident that our products would meet the high standards of the DM. We were honored to be able to work with the DM throughout this process so they can be confident that concrete construction in the region is being managed in a responsible and sustainable way.”

About

Kryton International Inc. is a global manufacturer of Smart Concrete® technologies that are designed to reduce risk and improve the performance and durability of concrete. In the 1970s, Kryton pioneered crystalline waterproofing solutions with their Krystol® technology. This proven technology has the ability to self-seal micro-cracks and ensure waterproofing for the life of the structure. In 2017, Kryton introduced Hard-Cem®, an integral concrete hardener that substantially increases abrasion and erosion resistance. In 2019, Kryton added Maturix® wireless sensors to their Smart Concrete product line, allowing contractors to access concrete temperature and strength development in real time.
